EXPLORING THE DEEPER MEANING OF PURPOSE

LET'S TALK ABOUT PURPOSE...

How connected are you to your own purpose?

In a session that I recently facilitated, I guided a group of founders to explore their relationship with purpose. Sharing this process here for you to also try on your own time and in your own pace.

For most of us, exploring our purpose is a challenging process. These series of prompts can help you reflect on what Purpose means for you and help you connect it to your lived experiences. We will be taking in a systemic and intergenerational lens on what PURPOSE means.

PURPOSE AND YOU

Think of a memory or experience from your childhood where you felt you are connected with your purpose.

  • How old were you?

  • Who was with you in this memory?

  • What was it that you were doing?

  • Where do you feel this memory in your body?

Reminisce and feel where that memory resides in your body. Journal what came up for you in this exercise.

PURPOSE AND YOUR FAMILY

Now think of a memory or experience from your immediate family where you can connect what purpose meant for them.

  • What do you hear, see and feel with that memory?

  • What comes up for you?

  • How did your parents talk to you about purpose?

  • How did their lives teach you about purpose?

  • Where in your body do you feel this memory?

Remember there might be feelings that get stirred and the request is to take it gently and compassionately. These are memories to explore and perhaps you can invite a friend, a partner or a loved one to give space for you in what you uncovered.

PURPOSE AND YOUR CULTURE

We are now expanding this definition and lived experiences of purpose by thinking of a memory that you have with your culture, your religion, the society that you grew up in.

  • What did they teach you about purpose?

  • It can also be historical, what did your historical context teach you about purpose?

  • What images come up?

  • What sensations can you feel in your body?

  • Where in your body can you feel these?

THIS LAST PROMPT BRINGS IN AN ELEMENT THAT WE OFTEN OVERLOOK AS WE EXPLORE CONCEPTS LIKE “PURPOSE”. MY WISH IS TO BRING IN THE VOICE OF AND FOR THE FUTURE AS A PRACTICE IN THESE REFLECTIONS.

PURPOSE AND THE FUTURE GENERATION

Now that we have explored and tuned in to your experiences as a child, with your family, with your culture and history, we bring in the future generation.

  • What is your message and wish for the future generation about Purpose?

  • What would you want to share with them?

  • How would you want the future generation to define, practice and embody purpose?

How was this exercise for you? What did you learn about your self? What questions surfaced? What new ideas came up?
